Dave Hughes' Letter to Bill DeGraf

One more area where '50 had an impact. From Dave Hughes:

My pioneering history with technology never ends. I am being interviewed for a 1 hour PBS program on Hedy Lamarr – whose stunning beauty I am sure many classmates remember – as a serious Inventor - and not just as a 40's pretty face. I think I was in love with her when I was 15 and she was 25. (Remember I was the Femmes Editor of the Pointer in '49!)

I was the one who, as a Principal Investigator under a 1990's National Science Foundation grant discovered that Hedy Lamarr (with George Anthiel) had patented in 1942 – for classified national security purposes - essentially inventing, Frequency Hopping radio – which you know as Blue Tooth, secure cell phone traffic, cordless phones, and unlicensed wireless that is now Wi-Fi.

I nominated her for a 1997 award as an Pioneer by the Electronic Frontier Association, which gave her world fame- in her 80's before she died.  An honor I had previously received in 1993 along with Vint Cerfand Paul Baran, the developers of the working Internet.

I have been given credit by numerous publications for 'discovering' Hedy as an improbable inventor. She was grateful for the belated recognition.

The new PBS program, including my interview, will probably be released in the fall. I will let you know when I do.
